Crochet Your Character
Art Vending Machines Australia by Steph Cibich

From 26 September 2019
Art Gallery of South Australia Courtyard

These artworks are based on Japanese Amigurumi crochet patterns and are informed by 90’s Nintendo gaming characters. By repeating and isolating certain patterns, Snoswell creates strange and wonderful creatures. The absurdity of multiple feet, hands and other semirecognizable elements create a sort of animated sculpture. It becomes a puzzle as to what character the object embodies, as the tension between the familiar and unknown takes over. She has also designed DIY kits so that you too may create your own whacky creature.

Regarding the work, Snoswell explains “it’s a form of collaboration; created by fans, for fans, they are not just selling the finished artefact, but they are providing the experience of creating your own fan-made object and further facilitating the social interaction that is the fan handicrafting community.”
